SKIN CONDITION CHARACTERISTICS
Aging Skin
  • Influenced by genetics, exposure to the elements (especially the sun), free radical damage, glycation, health conditions, overall skin care regimen, and lifestyle
  • Loss of collagen and elasticity, wrinkles, lines, sagging skin, lipid atrophy, dehydration, and discoloration
Environmentally Damaged
  • 20+ years
  • Response to sun exposure with or without protection, environmental pollution, free radical damage, glycation, and poor lifestyle habits such as smoking, excessive alcohol, and caffeine
  • Uneven pigmentation, loss of collagen and elasticity, enlarged pores, lines, wrinkles, dehydration, rough texture, and actinic keratoses
Sun Exposed
  • Any age
  • For those patients that spend their summers in the sun or whose lifestyle dictates prolonged exposure to the sun
  • Focus on protection
Hyper-pigmentation
  • 20+ years
  • Discoloration (often brown or darker than normal pigmentation) from over-production of melanin
  • Sun exposure, medications, hormone changes, birth control, post-pregnancy, melasma, inflammation, post aggressive topical procedures, post-laser or post-chemical peel reaction
  • Some ethnicities are prone to pigmentation problems
Acne Prone
  • 20+ years
  • History of acne breakouts, hormonal imbalances (PMS, pregnancy, menopause, or stress), cosmetic and lifestyle links.
Active Acne
  • Puberty onward
  • History of chronic acne, 10 or more lesions, genetic, hormonal, and stress related
  • Cosmetics rarely bring on an acute acne condition.
Hypersensitive
  • Any age
  • Influenced by genetics, environmental pollution, chemical exposure, and medications
  • Characterized by a history of inflammation, erythema, and sensitivity to topicals and environmental sources
  • Also includes history of alpha hydroxy acid use, glycolic, microdermabrasion, lasers, and surgery

 

SKIN TYPES

 

Skin type is generally determined by pore size and sebum production.  Skin types are not stagnant as skin cell metabolism and oil production slow down with age and environmental damage.

3.  Oily
4.  Combination
