- Discoloration (often brown or darker than normal pigmentation) from over-production of melanin
- Sun exposure, medications, hormone changes, birth control, post-pregnancy, melasma, inflammation, post aggressive topical procedures, post-laser or post-chemical peel reaction
- Some ethnicities are prone to pigmentation problems

- History of acne breakouts, hormonal imbalances (PMS, pregnancy, menopause, or stress), cosmetic and lifestyle links.
