5 Factors That Can Cause Your Skin To Age Prematurely

During your 20s and 30s, skin aging is hardly on your list of concerns. And chances are you are of the belief that when the time truly does come, you will age gracefully. Unfortunately, reality is a little different. There are some lifestyle and environmental factors that can cause your skin to age prematurely. These factors contribute silently to the aging process, causing fine lines and wrinkles even at a young age. Here are some of them:

#1 Increased sun exposure

Did you know that almost 80% of all aging signs are due to environmental factors, out of which sun exposure is one of the most damaging? This means you need to avoid soaking up the sun as much as you can. Sit under an umbrella at the beach and apply plenty of SPF 20 minutes prior to going outside. You can also reduce your skin’s exposure to the sun by wearing sunscreen as well as sun protective clothing. Apply the sunscreen on your face, neck, hands and any area that is exposed. Don’t forget your ears!

#2 Blue light exposure

With the pandemic forcing us to stay indoors on most days, our screen time has gone up considerably. Phones and computer screens, as well as indoor lighting, are major sources of blue light. And blue light has been found to cause various skin issues like hyperpigmentation, photoaging and collagen breakdown, which can result in fine lines, wrinkles and saggy skin. Blue light causes oxidative stress and antioxidant depletion. Apply an antioxidant rich moisturizer in the morning containing blue light defense ingredients such as niacinamide (Vitamin B3) and Vitamin C.

#3 Lack of sleep

If you have a habit of binge-watching your favorite shows till morning, it is time to stop. If numerous studies are to be believed, not catching enough sleep can make you look older than you are. Sleep plays an important role in allowing your skin to replenish and re-set, which contributes to its good health. A lack of sleep doesn’t just make your skin look tired but it also increases cortisol levels, which causes premature aging.

#4 Inconsistent skincare routine

Do you skip out on your moisturizer on some days? Do you think not using your face wash at night is okay? If you have an inconsistent skincare routine, you need to step it up. Having a consistent routine is important for your skin, especially for its healthy appearance. It doesn’t matter if you follow a simple cleansing-toning-moisturizing routine or 10-step process, you need to follow it every day, in the morning as well as at night. Consistency is key!

#5 Diet high in sugars and sweets

Lax and wrinkly skin, while associated with old age, can appear on a 30-something too. The reason? A diet that consists of excess amounts of sugar. The consumption of sugar produces enzymes that cause collagen and elastin to breakdown, which results in your skin losing its firmness. As an adult, your daily sugar intake should be not more than 6 teaspoons (for women) and 9 teaspoons (for men).
